Many Italian companies run on a Zucchetti ERP — one of the leading business software brands in Italy — and reach the point where the warehouse starts asking for more: handhelds on the floor, stock by location, traceability of batches and expiry dates, perhaps a first piece of automation. Kazam fits in exactly there — as an operational layer that talks to the ERP, without replacing it.
How the integration works
The integration is a two-way data exchange, with APIs and record layouts defined during the analysis phase on the Zucchetti product in use:
- From the ERP to Kazam: master data, purchase and sales orders, documents to be fulfilled.
- From Kazam to the ERP: goods-in and goods-out confirmations, shipments completed, inventory adjustments, detail of batches, serial numbers and expiry dates.
Warehouse accounting stays in the ERP; the operations — missions, routes, priorities, scanners — live in Kazam.
When it makes sense (and when it does not)
It makes sense when you need an operational layer that is open and adaptable: custom flows, automation to be driven directly (shuttles, sorters, AGVs over OPC-UA/Modbus/FINS/VDA 5050), or the need to avoid licence constraints on every workstation and handheld. If instead the company wants a single-vendor suite from top to bottom, that is a legitimate and different choice: Kazam plays the openness card — a source-available platform, integrable with different ERPs, in which your data stays under your control even if the ERP changes tomorrow.
What stays as it is
The first question is almost always the same: how much does the ERP have to be touched. The honest answer is that most of it is not touched at all.
Kazam does not go inside the ERP and does not change the way it works: it sits alongside it. The exchange happens in a dedicated area, a database separate from both the ERP and the warehouse, which acts as neutral ground between the two. Zucchetti carries on issuing its documents and keeping the accounts. The warehouse reads from there what it has to carry out, and gives back what it has done.
That also means the warehouse does not stop the day the ERP is updated. What the two sides have promised each other is the format of the data in the exchange area, not the version of the software that produces it.
How the transition is handled
The delicate period is the one in which the new warehouse coexists with the old habits. Here it helps that the exchange is asynchronous: the ERP deposits, the warehouse reads when it is ready. The two systems do not have to be up at the same instant for things to work.
Every row deposited carries a status — to be read, imported, discarded because superseded by a more recent version — with the time and the reason. During go-live that is the most useful thing there is. You look at the exchange area and see, row by row, what has gone in, what is still waiting and what has been replaced. There is nothing to infer from the effects downstream. And because the service reads back only what it has not yet processed, you can stop and restart it as often as you need without generating duplicates.
Every warehouse document also keeps the reference to the ERP document that originated it, on the header and on the lines. When something does not add up — and during go-live it happens — you trace it back to the source document without an investigation.
Frequently asked questions
Does Kazam replace the Zucchetti ERP?
No: administration, accounting and invoicing stay in the ERP. Kazam runs the physical operations of the warehouse and hands back the confirmed movements.
What happens if we change ERP in the future?
The integration is rebuilt towards the new ERP, but the warehouse does not stop: flows, locations, history and operator training stay in Kazam. It is one of the advantages of keeping the operational layer separate from the management one.
Do you also handle the automated part of the warehouse?
Yes: WES and WCS are native modules of the platform — real-time priorities and direct control of machines and robots, with no third-party software.
Where do we start?
With a technical analysis of the flows and the record layouts with the IT team: talk to an engineer.
Kazam is the source-available platform that covers WMS and WES and integrates with Sun Tech WCS. Talk to an engineer to assess the integration with your Zucchetti ERP.
